SUMMARY:Mass Timber Construction: Products\, Performance and Design (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Due to their high strength\, dimensional stability and positive environmental performance\, mass timber building products are quickly becoming materials of choice for sustainably-minded designers. This presentation will provide a detailed look at the variety of mass timber products available\, including glue-laminated timber (glulam)\, cross laminated timber (CLT)\, nail laminated timber (NLT)\, heavy timber decking\, and other engineered and composite systems. Applications for the use of these products under modern building codes will be discussed\, and examples of their use in U.S. projects reviewed. \nMass timber’s ability to act as both structure and exposed finish will also be highlighted\, as will its performance as part of an assembly\, considering design objectives related to structural performance\, fire resistance\, acoustics\, and energy efficiency. Other topics will include detailing and construction best practices\, lessons learned from completed projects and trends for the increased use of mass timber products in the future. \nLearning Objectives\nLearning Objective 1: Identify mass timber products available in North America and consider how they can be used under current building codes and standards. \nLearning Objective 2: Review completed mass timber projects that demonstrate a range of applications and system configurations. \nLearning Objective 3: Discuss benefits of using mass timber products\, including structural versatility\, prefabrication\, lighter carbon footprint\, and reduced labor costs. \nLearning Objective 4: Highlight possibilities for the expanded use and application of mass timber in larger and taller buildings. \nAbout the Presenter\nArchie Landreman\, CSI Wood Products Council-WoodWorks \nArchie lives in Racine\, Wisconsin and is the North Central Regional Director for WoodWorks\, an initiative of the Wood Products Council. Archie has been with WoodWorks since their Midwest inception in 2008 and has been actively involved in wood education and assisting with commercial wood projects. Some notable project assistance examples would be the T-3 building in Minneapolis\, Ascent in Milwaukee\, and Buffalo Sabres Arena in Buffalo\, New York. Archie has assisted on over three hundred projects and provided hundreds of hours of education to architects\, engineers\, contractors and developers. \nHe has been active in the wood and structural building component industry since 1970\, and has extensive experience with structural lumber\, engineered wood products\, sips\, wood trusses and mass timber. \nArchie is an active and participating member of the following organizations: American Institute of Architects\, Association of Licensed Architects\, Construction Specification Institute\, Forest Products Society\, National Frame Building Association\, Structural Building Component Association\, Structural Engineers Association\, Structural Insulated Panel Association and works closely with the Forest Products Lab in Madison\, Wisconsin. \nWebEx\nMeeting number (access code): 964 069 391 \nMeeting password: pWwhWpGE527

SUMMARY:Passive House 301: Measured Energy Performance
DESCRIPTION:PHIUS+ Certification is a performance based standard and compliance is verified through energy modeling and on-site quality insurance inspections. Building performance monitoring is important to ensure that a project has met the energy & carbon reduction goals anticipated through PHIUS+ Certification. PHIUS has collected monitored data from buildings across the country\, ranging from single family to 101-unit multifamily buildings. This presentation will discuss where to start with building monitoring\, pitfalls to avoid\, and the results of the collected data compared to the performance predicted by energy modeling software. \nLearning Objectives: \n1. Explore various options for monitoring building performance.\n2. Compare how monitored data compares to modeled expectations.\n3. Realize the value of building performance monitoring.\n4. Identify best practice methods of implementing monitoring systems through design and construction. \nPresenter Bios \nJames Ortega\nJames Ortega joined PHIUS in February of 2015 as a member of the Certification team\, where he provides design review and energy modeling services to evaluate project qualifications for PHIUS+ Certification. Ortega works closely with the submitting CPHC to provide feedback on questions pertaining to energy modeling and building plans. He also provides consulting services on static and dynamic energy modeling in WUFI Passive and THERM\, and spearheads energy modeling deliverables on feasibility studies for projects interested in pursuing PHIUS+ Certification. \nOrtega holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago\, and is a licensed architect in the state of Illinois. \nLisa White\nLisa White serves as the Certification Manager for the Passive House Institute US (PHIUS) and has been with PHIUS since 2012. She is also an instructor for Certified Passive House Consultant (CPHC®) and WUFI Passive software training. White holds a degree in Environmental Sustainability with a minor in Architecture from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign\, and a Master’s in Energy Engineering from the University of Illinois at Chicago. \nWhite works on certification program development and is a member of PHIUS’ technical committee. She also provides consulting services on static and dynamic energy modeling in WUFI Passive\, THERM modeling\, and project planning specific to passive building principles. White has presented at numerous conferences and events\, including Greenbuild\, PHIUS Annual North American Passive House Conferences\, the Affordable Comfort Institute national conference\, and Facades+.
